Fundraiser Profile

Our team comprises of 12 sporting enthusiasts from different sporting backgrounds, all sharing a love for endurance sport. We met while training for Ironman events over the years. The majority of our team work in financial services, either as Investment Fund Analysts, Wealth Managers, or Heads of Distribution Channels.  Others include IT Specialists, Buyers, and an Optometrist. We are young at heart, mostly family guys – and we really love cycling. The team includes:

  • Shaun Ruiters, Luigi Marinus, Dean Howburg,
  • Steven Hall, Craig Banda, Cherwyn Marcus,
  • Brandon Fortuin, Willie Egen, Justin Isaacs
  • Shane Samaai, Terry Samaai, Chris Heunis
We are grateful for our ability to take part in endurance sport and would like to "Do GREAT THINGS" and pay it forward. This year, we will be riding for “more than ourselves” and raising awareness and funds for the Breatheasy Programme, run out of the Red Cross Children's Hospital. The funds that we raise will go directly to purchasing breathing equipment.

About the Charity
The Childrens Hospital Trust

The Breatheasy Programme is a unique specialist nurse-led initiative at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) that empowers parents of children reliant on a tracheostomy or artificial ventilation for breathing to provide safe care for their children at home. Tracheostomy patients around the world characteristically face lengthy hospital stays. Through careful training and support of families, the Breatheasy programme ensures that children with tracheostomies instead return home to their families and communities, as soon as they are medically stable. Once home, they are monitored as outpatients by the programme, while family members take responsibility for routine day-to-day medical care (such as changing and suctioning the tracheostomy tubes). Breatheasy’s training enables families to provide home care equivalent to that of a professional nurse in the tertiary health sector. The equipment necessary for home-care is provided by the Breatheasy programme to families.

About the Event
Coronation Double Century

The Coronation Double Century is an annual 202 kilometer team cycle race, taking place on 25 November 2017. From Swellendam, cyclists go through Suurbraak and over Tradouw Pass towards Barrydale. They then make their way past Montagu, Ashton, Robertson, Bonnievale and finally finish in Swellendam. The race is the equivalent of an ultra-marathon and participants need to have put in the necessary training to finish in comfort and before the cut-off's. It's more than just a cycle race - it's all about camaraderie and team spirit.
