What a journey the last year has been raising awareness and funds for the Breatheasy Programme through my participation in Endurance Races. The  Full Ironman in April last year was a huge physical challenge for me – especially running my first marathon after a 180km bike and 3.8km Swim. Thinking about those less fortunate than me, not having the luxury of breathing for granted, and knowing that I could make a difference certainly helped me rise to the occasion and make it onto the famous carpet to hear Paul Kaye greet me with “Steven, you are an IRONMAN” This year, I have decided to again step out of my comfort zones – with my next challenge being the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon (56km) in April 2017. Having never run further than 42.2km before, this iconic event is sure to test my ability to persevere.  One week after this event, I will be taking on the Old Mutual Joberg2C mountain bike stage race. Some clients and I will be embarking on the first 3 days of the race -330km  from Karan Beef (Heidelberg)  in Gauteng, through the Free State, Frankfort, Reitz ending up at the Sterkfontein Dam. My final big challenge, the pièce de résistance, will be taking on the Ultimate Human Race – the Comrades Marathon.  The ‘up run” starts Durban and will end in Pietermaritzburg almost 88km later. The official theme of this year’s race is “Zinikele” – It Takes All of You. This is going to be tough, but that is ok as I am doing it “for more than myself” I'm very grateful that I have the physical ability to take part in endurance events, as well as taking for granted that I can breathe unaided each day -  and I would like to do this for those who can't. I hope to create awareness for the Breatheasy Programme - which is a unique specialist nurse-led initiative at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital,  that empowers parents of children reliant on a tracheostomy or artificial ventilation for breathing to provide safe care for their children at home.  By raising funds for this wonderful cause, we can contribute to improving the quality of life for these children and help them lead the normal life that they deserve.” My aim is to raise at least R500 000 for this wonderful programme.

About the Charity
The Childrens Hospital Trust

The Breatheasy Programme is a unique specialist nurse-led initiative at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) that empowers parents of children reliant on a tracheostomy or artificial ventilation for breathing to provide safe care for their children at home. Tracheostomy patients around the world characteristically face lengthy hospital stays. Through careful training and support of families, the Breatheasy programme ensures that children with tracheostomies instead return home to their families and communities, as soon as they are medically stable. Once home, they are monitored as outpatients by the programme, while family members take responsibility for routine day-to-day medical care (such as changing and suctioning the tracheostomy tubes). Breatheasy’s training enables families to provide home care equivalent to that of a professional nurse in the tertiary health sector. The equipment necessary for home-care is provided by the Breatheasy programme to families: this includes suction machines, humidifiers, ventilators, among others, as well as a range of associated consumables required for safe care.
